Gel batteries have become an alternative to conventional lead-acid batteries. Unlike the latter, gel models are maintenance-free batteries. This means that they do not require refilling of the electrolyte. The tight housing and the electrolyte in the form of a gel speak in their favour. This ensures that it doesn't leak, so the battery can be held in any position and is more resistant to shocks.

Gel battery life
One of the biggest advantages of gel batteries is their durability. This type has the longest lifespan of any battery on the market, lasting up to a dozen years with proper use. Importantly, gel batteries are also more resistant to change and extreme weather conditions.

Gel batteries can be stored for many months without recharging. Their capacity drops to:
- 91% after 3 months
- 82 % after 6 months
- 64 % after 9 months

Choosing a gel battery
Suitable dimensions are not everything. When choosing a battery, you need to pay attention to its capacity - it should be no more than 110% and no less than 90% of the recommended capacity for the device you intend to power. Also important is the output voltage, which must be very close to the recommended value (+/- 0.2 V).

Application of gel batteries
Gel batteries are used in motorcycles, golf carts and lawnmowers, among others. They are also used in emergency power supplies, photovoltaic installations, alarm systems and electric toys. In addition, these batteries can be found in vehicles with a lot of electrical equipment, e.g. campers. These are then used not to start the vehicle but to power electronic devices.

For the charger to work properly and not damage the battery, it must have the correct current and voltage. At different charging stages these values will vary, so it is worth choosing an automatic charger that not only adjusts the appropriate charging current and voltage, but also switches off when the battery is fully charged.
