Larger outside taps and standpipes often use a 1'' thread that doesn't directly accept ordinary garden hose fittings - this adapter screws onto that thread and gives a proper connection point for a hose, quick-connector or nozzle.
A straightforward fit-and-forget part for setting up a watering point on a tap that's bigger than the usual 3/4'' or 1/2'' garden thread.
