The term "freon-free" is used to describe systems, products or technologies that do not contain freons or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Freons are chemical compounds that were once widely used as refrigerants in a variety of applications, such as refrigerators, air conditioning systems, and heat pumps.

Currently, freons are increasingly being replaced by more ecological alternatives due to their significant negative impact on the environment. Freons are known for their high ability to damage the ozone layer and contribute to global warming as greenhouse gases.

Freon-free systems and products use other, more ecological refrigerants that have a lower or no harmful effect on the environment. These alternative refrigerants include, for example, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs).

The use of freon-free systems and refrigerants is part of efforts to protect the environment and mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Regulations and standards are created to limit the use of CFCs and promote the transition to CFC-free solutions with a lower environmental impact.
