The VFL (visual fault locator) is specifically designed for technicians who need an efficient and economical tool for fiber monitoring, fiber routing and continuity control in fiber optic networks. With the VFL it is possible to find stops, bad connections, bends or cracks in fiber optic cables. It is also possible to find errors in OTDR - dead zones. It is used for end-to-end identification of visual fiber. VFL puts a 650nm laser beam into the fiber. When the light hits a violation or a sharp bend, it scatters. The scattered light is visible from the outside of the cable. VFL finds breaks in short patch cables that OTDR cannot detect due to their operational dead zone. The fault locator is also much cheaper than the OTDR. However, it is not suitable for use on dark colored or armored fiber optic cables. VFL can be operated in either continuous wave (CW) or pulsed mode. Pulse mode helps in fault finding in daylight or better ambient light conditions, and also improves battery life. It can also be used in connector quality control. Often a connector may seem to be perfect, but inside the connector on the protective ring, for example, poor bonding or dirt can create a micro-coating on the fiber. This micro-coating will cause excessive loss when transmitting or receiving a signal and can lead to premature connector failure. As a visible light beam passes through the fiber, it may show from the connector distortion with a series of rings layered on the output. Bending and twisting of the fiber, may affect the overall intensity of the pattern, but not the ring of the pattern itself.
