Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is an organic compound, specifically an alcohol, which belongs to the group of glycols. The propylene glycol molecule has the chemical formula C3H8O2 and is a colorless, odorless and hygroscopic liquid. This compound has two hydroxyl groups, making it similar in structure to ethylene glycol, but less toxic.

Use of propylene glycol:

Food and pharmaceuticals: Propylene glycol is used as an additive in food products and pharmaceutical preparations. In the food industry, it is used as a moisturizer, emulsifier and stabilizer. In pharmacy, it is often used to improve the solubility of drugs.

Cosmetics: Propylene glycol is found in a variety of cosmetic products such as creams, lotions, deodorants, and toothpastes, where it acts as a moisturizer and emollient.

Heat flow: Propylene glycol is used in cooling and heating systems as a coolant and low-temperature heat carrier. It is also used in heating and cooling systems of buildings.

Making fake smoke: In some amusement parks, theater shows and movies, propylene glycol is used to make fake smoke.

Industrial applications: Propylene glycol is used in many industrial processes, such as the production of paints, varnishes, resins and cleaners.

Safety and risks:

It is generally considered safe for normal use in industry, food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. However, with incorrect use or inappropriate exposure, it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Therefore, it is important to follow the manufacturer's safety precautions and instructions when handling this chemical.
