The PNI Safe House 230 is a pair that reports a gas leak and shuts off the gas supply at the same time. The kit contains a gas detector and an electromagnetic valve with a 3/4 inch internal thread. The detector monitors natural gas (methane), LPG (propane-butane) and coal gas. When the concentration exceeds 20% of the lower explosive limit, it sounds a continuous siren of at least 85 dB and lights a red LED.

At the same time it sends a short 9–12 V electrical pulse to the valve, which closes the gas supply in less than one second. After the cause has been removed, the valve is reopened by hand. The kit is ready to connect: plug the detector into a 230 V socket and connect the valve to it with the 90 cm cable provided.

According to the manufacturer, the semiconductor sensor has a service life of up to 5 years, and the flame-retardant ABS housing is easy to clean. Power consumption is 3 W at most. The kit suits kitchens, boiler rooms, garages and small commercial premises. Note: the detector does not detect carbon monoxide (CO).

Installation and compatibility

The detector is for indoor use only, at humidity up to 95%, and not for places with a lot of water vapour. Natural gas is lighter than air, so the detector is placed about 30 cm below the ceiling and 1.5 m from the gas source; LPG is heavier and sinks to the floor, so the detector is placed 30 cm above the floor, also 1.5 m from the source. After switching on, the sensor warms up for about 2–3 minutes, during which the gas test does not work; the end of warm-up is confirmed by a beep.

The valve has a 3/4" internal thread, a maximum pressure of 100 kPa and a brass alloy body. Installing the valve on the gas pipe must be done by a qualified person authorised to work on gas installations; the kit does not replace regular inspections of the gas appliance.

Frequently asked questions

How can the alarm be tested?
According to the manufacturer, press the button of a lighter and hold it close to the detector inlet without igniting it, releasing the gas slowly. The test works only after the sensor warm-up has finished.

Does the kit detect carbon monoxide?
No. The detector is intended for combustible gases and does not detect carbon monoxide.

How do I reopen the valve?
After the cause of the leak has been removed, open it by hand.
