The PNI Safe House 400 is a gas detector and solenoid valve kit that raises an alarm and shuts off the supply when gas leaks. The pack holds two such kits, so you can cover, for example, a kitchen and a boiler room or two flats.
The detector with a semiconductor sensor responds to natural gas (methane), LPG (propane-butane) and coal gas. The alarm triggers at only 10% of the lower explosive limit: a continuous siren of at least 85 dB sounds and a red LED flashes. According to the manufacturer the sensor lasts up to 5 years.
At the same time the detector sends a 9–12 V pulse to the valve with a 3/4" internal thread, which closes the gas supply in under 1 second. The valve body is made of aluminium alloy. The detector runs on 100–240 V AC and draws less than 3 W. It does not detect carbon monoxide (CO).
Installation and compatibility
Natural gas is lighter than air, so the detector is placed about 30 cm below the ceiling and 1.5 m from the gas source. LPG is heavier and sinks to the floor, so the detector goes about 30 cm above the floor, also 1.5 m from the source. Do not mount it where there is a lot of water vapour, as it could cause false alarms. After switching on, the sensor warms up for about 180 seconds.
The detector measures 72 x 115 x 35 mm and the valve 75 x 45 x 110 mm. The valve works at pressures up to 100 kPa and at −26 to +80 °C; the cable to the detector is 90 cm. Installing the valve on the gas pipe must be done by a qualified person authorised to work on gas installations.
