Maxwell

The Maxwell unit (abbreviation Mx) is the physical unit of magnetic flux in the CGS (centimeter-gram-second) system. Magnetic flux is a quantitative measure of the number of magnetic field lines passing through a certain area in a magnetic field.

Definition: Maxwell is defined as the flow of a magnetic field through a surface, the normal of which is oriented perpendicular to the magnetic field, when there is a magnetic field induction of 1 gauss at the unit center of this surface. Formally: 1 Maxwell = 1 gauss * cm²

The Maxwell unit is used to measure magnetic flux and was named after the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who was a major contributor to the fields of electromagnetism and electrodynamics. In modern unit systems such as SI, the Weber unit (Wb) is often used as the unit of magnetic flux, where 1 Wb = 10^8 Maxwell.
