The combined surge protection design uses:
 

• MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) - varistor made of metal oxide:
  It responds to overvoltage by sharply reducing its resistance when a certain voltage is reached, thusdiverts excessive current into the ground. It is fast and responsive.

• GDT (Gas Discharge Tube) - gas-filled spark gap:
  They switch at higher voltages and are capable ofsafely dissipate large impulse currents (e.g. from a lightning strike) without causing damage. They have a long service life.

• MOV (second layer):
  It serves to further dampen the residual voltage and ensures smooth closure of the surge pulse.
