The Filax switch was developed to switch the power supply of sensitive devices such as computers, industrial control systems or modern audio-visual and entertainment equipment from the priority AC power supply to a second alternative power supply. A typical priority source is the power grid, a generator or another source such as a local power connection e.g. at a marina or campsite. A typical alternative source is a DC-AC inverter (inverter). Because of the very high switching speed of less than 20 milliseconds, sensitive instruments and equipment will continue to operate without interruption. The Filax is not intended for uninterruptible power supply of large household appliances such as washing machines or electric motors due to too high inrush currents. The operating frequency can be set to 50 or 60 Hz using a jumper. Switching from priority to alternative AC power supply occurs when the voltage of the priority power supply drops below 180 V or the frequency of the priority power supply drops below 45 Hz (46 Hz) or vice versa above 60 Hz (68 Hz). The reverse switchover to the priority source will take place after 30 seconds at the earliest. When the parameters return to acceptable values, which is a minimum voltage of 188 V, a minimum frequency of 47 Hz (52 Hz) or 56 Hz (63 Hz). The values in brackets are for a frequency of 60 Hz. It shall be installed in a dry and well-ventilated location. The inputs must be protected against currents exceeding 16 A. If the aggregate consumption of the appliances is less than 850 W, the connections (jumpers) are removed manually from the Filax device.
